Trump Accounts Surpass 70 Million as New Stock Donation Rules Attract Major Philanthropic Contributions

President Donald Trump highlighted the recent surge in Trump Accounts during an Oval Office event, noting that nearly 70 million accounts have been created, with over 60 million established this month due to automatic enrollment.

The initiative allows families with children born between 2025 and 2028 to access a $1,000 government-funded seed deposit, contributing to a total of over $4.5 billion deposited into these accounts. The IRS has recently permitted stock donations to Trump Accounts, a shift from previous guidelines that only allowed diversified index funds.

This change is expected to attract large-scale private donations, with IRS CEO Frank Bisignano mentioning that several major gifts are anticipated, including contributions from notable philanthropists. However, the introduction of individual stocks into these accounts raises concerns about increased risk due to potential concentration in specific companies.

Financial experts have pointed out that while the new rules may incentivize donations by allowing wealthy individuals to avoid capital gains taxes, they also expose account holders to the volatility of individual stocks.

The Trump Accounts, which are open to any U.S. child under 18, present families with various investment options, including comparisons to 529 college savings plans and custodial accounts. As the midterm elections approach, the program's expansion and the involvement of high-profile donors may influence public perception and political dynamics surrounding the initiative
