Rep. Frank Pallone (D-NJ), the leading Democrat on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, has formally requested that Elon Musk provide a tour of SpaceX's xAI data centers and power plants located in Memphis, Tennessee.
In his letter, Pallone expressed that there is significant public anxiety regarding the implications of AI data centers on local communities, including concerns about job security, property values, and environmental health.
He noted that electricity prices are increasing, the electric grid is under pressure, and local air and water quality are deteriorating, which has led to heightened opposition to data centers. A Gallup survey indicated that 70% of Americans are against having an AI data center in their vicinity, with nearly half strongly opposed.
Pallone has set a deadline of August 11 for Musk to respond with information about the facilities, which are critical to SpaceX's AI strategy as the company seeks to compete with industry leaders like OpenAI and Anthropic. The facilities, known as Colossus and Colossus 2, are equipped with advanced Nvidia processors and were developed by xAI prior to its acquisition by SpaceX.
Pallone criticized Musk for allegedly neglecting community health by using off-grid gas turbines for power without the necessary permits, labeling it a significant health risk. Additionally, the Trump Administration's Department of Justice has intervened in a lawsuit aimed at halting the use of these turbines, which environmental advocates claim are illegal and polluting.
