European Space Startups Secure Significant Funding to Compete with U.S. Dominance

Space companies are experiencing a surge in investment, with notable funding rounds including a €300 million ($346 million) raise by Open Cosmos, a satellite manufacturer focused on building infrastructure for Europe.

CEO Rafel Jordà Siquier emphasized the need for multiple companies to meet the increasing demand in the space sector, highlighting that Open Cosmos has been profitable for five consecutive years. This funding wave follows several other significant investments, such as the $450 million Series C round by The Exploration Company and €108 million raised by PLD Space.

Despite this momentum, Europe still faces a funding gap compared to the U.S., where 67% of private space investment is directed. The U.S. public space budget is approximately five times that of Europe, underscoring the challenges European companies face in scaling operations to compete with established players like SpaceX.

Political tensions and national strategies may further complicate Europe's efforts to close this gap, as noted by European Commissioner for Defence and Space Andrius Kubilius during the recent International Space Summit
