As the solar eclipse approaches, travel demand in regions like Reykjavik and northern Spain has surged, resulting in hotel prices averaging $1,012 per night in Reykjavik, which is double the rate from the same period last year. Short-term rentals in Reykjavik are priced at $1,172, reflecting a 178% increase year-over-year.
In Bilbao, short-term rentals have reached $1,088, a 206% rise from last year, while hotel prices are up 35% to $315. Interestingly, while initial prices were set high, many hotels have begun discounting closer to the event, with rates in Reykjavik dropping by 46% since mid-May.
Jonathan Gough from Lighthouse Intelligence noted that different pricing strategies were employed by hoteliers, with some initially pricing rooms speculatively high and others adjusting rates as demand increased.
