The Senate is scheduled to vote on Jay Clayton, President Donald Trump's nominee for director of national intelligence, which would grant him oversight of 18 U.S. intelligence agencies.
Clayton, who previously chaired the Securities and Exchange Commission and currently serves as U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, is expected to be confirmed following a procedural hurdle he overcame on Monday. Senate Majority Leader John Thune emphasized the importance of having a proven leader in this role amid heightened security threats.
Clayton's confirmation would end the controversial tenure of Bill Pulte, who faced criticism for his management of intelligence personnel. Although initially viewed as a non-controversial pick, Clayton's confirmation process was delayed when Trump instructed him not to attend a scheduled hearing.
The hearing became contentious when Clayton refrained from acknowledging Joe Biden's election victory and defended the subpoenaing of journalists, which has since been withdrawn. His confirmation may also facilitate discussions on renewing Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which lapsed in June, partly due to opposition to Pulte's interim appointment
