Rivian (RIVN) Lays Off Hundreds of Workers to Narrow Losses Amid R2 SUV Launch

On Tuesday, Rivian announced it would be laying off hundreds of workers, specifically targeting teams in service and customer segments. This decision comes as the company seeks to narrow its financial losses, which amounted to $3.6 billion last year despite delivering 42,247 vehicles.

The layoffs represent a continuation of Rivian's restructuring efforts, following a previous reduction of over 600 employees in October. The company, which had 15,232 employees at the end of last year, is attempting to transition from a niche luxury EV manufacturer to a more mainstream competitor, similar to Tesla, with the launch of its R2 SUV.

Rivian has yet to achieve profitability and reported significant losses in its automotive segment, averaging about $6,000 lost per vehicle delivered in the first quarter of this year. The current market environment for EV manufacturers is becoming increasingly challenging, particularly due to regulatory changes that have affected federal incentives for electric vehicle purchases
