OpenAI has successfully completed a secondary share sale amounting to approximately $7 billion, enabling current and former employees to sell their stock as the company reaches an $852 billion valuation. This tender offer follows OpenAI's significant $122 billion funding round in March and aims to provide liquidity for employees ahead of a possible initial public offering (IPO).
The company has been rapidly growing since the launch of its ChatGPT chatbot in 2022 and has previously engaged in secondary sales as part of its pre-IPO strategy, including a $6.6 billion tender offer at a $500 billion valuation last October.
Although OpenAI filed its prospectus with the Securities and Exchange Commission in June, it has not yet announced a specific timeline for its IPO, a situation mirrored by its competitor, Anthropic. This secondary sale is a strategic move to alleviate liquidity pressures and prepare for the anticipated public offering
