The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) will begin extended-hours options trading starting Monday, allowing trading from 7:30 AM to 9:25 AM ET and a late session from 4:00 PM to 4:15 PM ET. This initiative includes 29 major stocks and funds, such as Nvidia, Bank of America, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust, and the iShares Russell 2000 ETF.
Notably, the NYSE plans to extend trading hours to 23 hours a day, five days a week for these securities by December 6, 2026. Kevin Tyrrell, NYSE's chief product officer, emphasized that this expansion is a response to market demand for investment opportunities and risk management.
The move aligns with a broader trend towards 24/7 trading, which has gained traction in various asset classes, including cryptocurrencies and derivatives. Recent data from CBOE indicates that extended hours trading has reached record levels, averaging over 199,000 contracts per day.
However, initial trading volumes during the first extended session were low, with Tesla options seeing the most activity ahead of its earnings report, where over 3,000 contracts traded, predominantly call options, valued at less than $100,000 according to SpotGamma data
