According to a report from CBRE, New York now boasts 394,300 tech jobs, surpassing the San Francisco Bay Area's 375,730 jobs for the first time in 13 years. The rise in New York's tech workforce is attributed to a contraction in the Bay Area's tech sector, alongside increased hiring in finance for AI roles.
The report highlights that AI-specific jobs have grown significantly, with 751,000 AI-related workers across the U.S. and Canada, making up nearly one-third of all tech job listings. Notably, AI roles have seen a substantial increase, with both New York and San Francisco adding over 20,000 AI jobs since mid-2025.
In the office leasing market, AI companies accounted for 58% of all leasing activity in San Francisco in the first half of 2026, totaling around 10 million square feet since the beginning of the year. This trend suggests a recovery in office demand, particularly in markets with high concentrations of AI workers, such as Manhattan, Boston, and Seattle.
The report also counters concerns that AI would lead to job losses, indicating instead that it tends to create new roles and change existing ones, particularly in the finance sector
