Mistral's introduction of the Mistral Large 4 (ML4), a 1-trillion-parameter AI model, positions the company as a key player in the open AI model market, especially as Western firms strive to catch up with Chinese advancements.

The model is designed for various applications, including cybersecurity and finance, and was developed using 4,000 Nvidia Grace Blackwell GPUs over two months in Mistral's European data centers. Following a substantial Series D funding round of 3 billion euros ($3.4 billion) in September, which valued the company at 21 billion euros, Mistral is now one of the most valuable AI startups in Europe.

The launch of ML4 is particularly timely as the demand for open AI models grows, especially after incidents like Hugging Face's reliance on a Chinese model for cybersecurity. Mistral claims that ML4 will outperform other open-weight models developed outside China by a significant margin, although it acknowledges that it still has room for improvement in areas like coding.

The model is currently available in preview to select developers and cybersecurity leaders, with a broader release planned for later this month. This move not only enhances Mistral's competitive edge but also reflects the increasing importance of open AI models in the global tech landscape
