Mississippi Senate Candidate Ty Pinkins Aims to Spoil Republican Incumbent Cindy Hyde-Smith’s Chances

Ty Pinkins, who garnered 2.1% of the vote, stated that he initially aimed to win but shifted his focus to spoiling the race after realizing he had no chance. His decision to remain in the race may have inadvertently helped Colom by drawing votes away from Hyde-Smith, particularly from Republican voters.

Pinkins noted that he intentionally campaigned in areas with lower Black populations to avoid splitting the vote with Colom, who is also Black. As of now, Colom leads Hyde-Smith by just 1,936 votes, a mere 0.2 percentage points, with 96.2% of the votes counted.

This election is significant as it marks a potential shift in Mississippi's political landscape, with a Black Democrat leading for the first time since Reconstruction. The SPLC Action Fund had previously indicated that Hyde-Smith's declining favorability could create an opportunity for Democrats, and Pinkins' role as a spoiler could be pivotal in this context
