Senator Mitch McConnell Provides Health Update Following Hospitalization Due to Fall

07/12/2026, 03:31 PM politics announcement

Senator Mitch McConnell, 84, has been absent from the Senate since June 14 due to a fall that rendered him unconscious and required hospitalization. In a statement, he clarified that he did not suffer any serious injuries, such as broken bones or a concussion, nor did he experience a heart attack or stroke. While hospitalized, he also dealt with a mild case of pneumonia.

McConnell, who is the longest-serving party leader in Senate history, emphasized that he is still engaged with Senate business and working with his staff, despite not being able to vote in person yet. His absence has raised concerns about his health, especially after reports of emergency services responding to a cardiac arrest at his home.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear had previously requested an update on McConnell's health, which he has now provided. McConnell plans to retire at the end of his term next year
