Roundhill Investments Launches New AI Thematic ETF Targeting Photonics and Optics

Roundhill Investments has seen substantial success with its Memory ETF (DRAM), which quickly attracted tens of billions of dollars since its launch in April. The firm is now set to introduce the Roundhill Photonics and Optics ETF (LYTE), targeting the photonics industry, which is gaining traction due to the increasing need for optical networking in AI data centers.

Optical networking utilizes light pulses for data transmission, offering advantages over traditional copper wiring, such as enhanced speed, energy efficiency, and longer transmission distances.

Major players like Nvidia are heavily investing in photonics technology, with Nvidia committing at least $6.5 billion to related companies and planning to release its Feynman microarchitecture in 2028, which aims to improve data center interconnectivity. The market for optical networking is expected to grow from $15 billion to $154 billion between 2026 and 2028, according to Goldman Sachs.

However, the LYTE ETF faces risks, particularly if the AI sector experiences volatility or setbacks, as seen with the LAZR Photonics & Optics ETF, which has struggled to gain traction since its launch.

Experts suggest that while thematic ETFs like LYTE can enhance portfolio growth, they should not replace broader market funds, and investors should maintain diversification to mitigate risks associated with market cycles
