Major U.S. Egg Producers Cal-Maine Foods, Versova, and Hickman’s Egg Ranch Settle Price Manipulation Probe for $3.3 Million

06/30/2026, 10:37 AM business agreement Cal-Maine Foods

The settlement involves Cal-Maine Foods, Versova, and Hickman's Egg Ranch, who were accused of illegally coordinating to inflate egg prices over nearly three years. This collusion allegedly contributed to a dramatic increase in egg prices, which saw a 150% rise in February 2023 compared to the previous year, largely attributed to supply issues from bird flu outbreaks.

The companies will pay $1.5 million, $800,000, and $1 million respectively, and are required to implement antitrust compliance measures to prevent future price manipulation. While the companies deny wrongdoing, they will also donate approximately 53 million eggs to food banks.

This case highlights ongoing concerns about food affordability amid rising inflation and could set a precedent for how the government addresses price manipulation in the food sector
