Indonesian State-Owned Telecom PT Telkom Indonesia (Persero) Considers Sale of Venture Capital Unit MDI Ventures Amid Corruption Scandal

TelkomMetra is reportedly evaluating the sale of MDI Ventures, a prominent venture capital firm managing $830 million in assets, as it navigates a challenging environment marked by a recent corruption verdict against former executives linked to a failed investment in agritech startup TaniHub Group. The firm has engaged Jefferies for advisory support, although no final decision has been made yet.

MDI Ventures has been a key player in Indonesia's tech investment scene, backing over 80 companies, including six unicorns. However, the Indonesian tech sector is currently experiencing a funding drought, with capital raised dropping significantly.

The corruption case against MDI's former executives has raised concerns about the risks associated with state investments, as Indonesia's anti-corruption laws allow for criminal charges over perceived state financial losses.

This situation could deter future investments in state-owned enterprises and complicate decision-making for executives, potentially stifling innovation and growth in the sector
