India’s Retail Inflation Rises to 5.54% in September, Exceeding Expectations

India's headline inflation rose to 5.54% in September from 4.82% in August, surpassing economists' expectations of 5.40%. This marks the highest inflation rate in 22 months, driven by a significant increase in food inflation, which climbed to 7.74% from 5.97% the previous month.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) recently raised interest rates for the first time in 2023, indicating that further rate cuts are unlikely in the near term. The RBI's current stance suggests that future policy actions may involve either rate hikes or maintaining the current rates.

The central bank has also raised its economic growth forecast to 7.1% but warned that ongoing geopolitical tensions, trade frictions, and high international commodity prices could negatively impact economic activity.

Additionally, the rural economy faces risks from the Super El Nino, which has resulted in the lowest rainfall in over a decade, exacerbating drought conditions in key agricultural states. HSBC analysts predict another rate hike in December, reflecting concerns over persistent inflation pressures
