Open enrollment season is a crucial time for Americans to select their health insurance plans for 2027, with approximately 166 million people obtaining coverage through employer-sponsored plans and an additional 19.2 million through the Affordable Care Act marketplace.

The enrollment period for the ACA runs from November 1, 2026, to January 15, 2027, with coverage starting as early as January 1 for those who enroll by December 15.

Experts emphasize the importance of evaluating both cost and choice when selecting a plan, as consumers must navigate various options like HMOs, PPOs, EPOs, and POS plans, each with distinct cost-sharing structures and provider networks.

Carolyn McClanahan, a financial planner, suggests a two-question algorithm to guide consumers: prioritizing either choice or cost and considering the benefits of health savings accounts (HSAs). HSAs offer significant tax advantages for those enrolled in high-deductible plans, making them an attractive option for individuals in higher tax brackets.

However, consumers must ensure they understand the specifics of their chosen plan, including deductibles, co-insurance, and the network of doctors, to avoid unexpected costs and ensure adequate coverage for their healthcare needs
