General Motors reported a total of 670,974 new vehicles sold in the third quarter, marking a 5.5% decrease compared to the previous year. The decline in sales is particularly pronounced in the electric vehicle (EV) segment, where demand has diminished following a surge last year driven by federal incentives that are now ending.
According to Cox Automotive, while overall new vehicle sales have exceeded expectations this year, GM's performance is concerning, especially as it only offers one hybrid vehicle, a Corvette, amidst rising consumer interest in hybrids due to high fuel prices.
The national average for gas prices stands at $4.41, which is expected to further affect sales of GM's larger trucks and SUVs, critical segments for the company. Year-to-date, all of GM's brands have seen declines, with Cadillac experiencing a significant 25% drop.
Analysts suggest that GM's struggles in the EV market may provide an opportunity for Toyota, a leader in hybrid vehicles, to increase its market presence as consumer preferences shift
