Eli Lilly has secured approval from the U.K.'s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency to sell its weight-loss drug Foundayo, which is also indicated for type 2 diabetes. This approval allows Foundayo to enter the competitive landscape against Novo Nordisk's Wegovy, which launched in the U.K. just two months prior.
Foundayo, a small molecule medicine, offers the advantage of being taken without food restrictions, unlike Wegovy, which requires specific timing and conditions for consumption.
Despite a slower uptake in the U.S. market, where Foundayo generated $98 million in sales in its second quarter, Lilly's CEO David Ricks noted that the drug is still establishing itself among healthcare providers and patients.
Both companies believe that the introduction of these oral medications is broadening the weight-loss market rather than merely shifting existing customers from injectable treatments. Novo's CEO Mike Doustdar highlighted that in the initial weeks of Wegovy's availability in the U.K., approximately 300,000 patients began using the pill, indicating strong initial demand.
The future of the weight-loss market may increasingly favor oral medications, as both companies continue to navigate this evolving landscape
