Delta Air Lines has announced the launch of a new fare category called Basic Business for its premium cabins, which will not include benefits such as free seat selection and access to airport lounges. This move follows a similar strategy by United Airlines, aimed at capitalizing on the strong demand from affluent travelers.
The Basic Business fare will feature assigned seating at check-in, reduced mileage earnings, and limited flexibility regarding changes and cancellations. This fare structure is part of Delta's broader strategy to segment its offerings, as noted by former President Glen Hauenstein, who indicated that the airline has been developing this approach for over a year.
The new fares will be available for purchase starting Wednesday for flights commencing in September, although Delta has not specified which markets will offer this option. As Delta prepares to report its second-quarter results, this initiative highlights the airline's focus on optimizing revenue streams in a competitive market
