Circle Internet Group and Tether have taken precautionary measures by freezing over $1.8 billion in funds linked to a possible hack involving Binance, the largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume. Although Binance has not confirmed any breach, it acknowledged a 'potential security issue' and assured users that their funds remain safe.
Circle's CEO Jeremy Allaire reported that more than $800 million in USD Coin was frozen, while Tether's CEO Paolo Adroino stated that over $1.5 billion of USDT was also frozen in connection with the incident. Following these announcements, Bitcoin's value dropped by more than 3%, falling below $80,000, and Circle's shares fell approximately 5% in after-hours trading.
This situation highlights the ongoing vulnerabilities in the cryptocurrency sector and may lead to increased scrutiny and caution among investors
