Typhoon Bavi is currently moving towards Wenzhou, China, after causing damage in Japan and Taiwan. With maximum sustained winds of 144 km per hour (90 mph), Bavi is classified as a Category 1 typhoon.
The National Meteorological Center reported that it is about 200 km (124 miles) southeast of Wenling and is expected to make landfall in Wenzhou, which has a population of around 10 million, early on Sunday. In preparation, more than 1.7 million people were evacuated in Zhejiang province and over 100,000 in Fujian province.
While Taiwan experienced significant disruptions, including the cancellation of 920 international flights and a typhoon holiday declared across many cities, it did not suffer major damage as Bavi did not make landfall there. The Philippines reported 17 fatalities due to heavy rains associated with Bavi, underscoring the storm's broader impact in the region.
Local residents in Wenzhou expressed cautious optimism about the government's preparedness, although concerns about safety and supply availability remain prevalent. This situation illustrates the ongoing risks posed by extreme weather events in the region and the importance of emergency preparedness for both residents and local authorities
