Karen Silk, assistant governor at the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, highlighted that exporters are actively seeking alternative markets as China's economic growth has slowed to multi-year lows, affected by weak domestic demand and a real estate slump. China accounted for about a quarter of New Zealand's total exports over the past year, with dairy products being a significant portion of this trade.
The shift in focus comes as New Zealand's central bank raised interest rates to combat inflation, indicating a challenging economic environment. The ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly the conflict in the Middle East, have also contributed to rising global commodity prices, which may provide some cost advantages for New Zealand's farmers despite the decline in exports to China.
The ability of New Zealand to diversify its export markets will be crucial as it navigates these economic challenges
