In a recent interview with CNBC, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent revealed plans to potentially increase the government's buyback of longer-dated securities beyond the announced $4 billion. This decision follows a doubling of the scheduled buybacks from $2 billion, which had initially led to a temporary decline in yields.

However, yields quickly reversed this decline, with the 30-year bond trading around 5.235% and the 10-year yield rising to approximately 4.704%. Bessent emphasized that the decision to increase buybacks is not directly tied to current yield levels but rather aims to encourage a focus on economic fundamentals rather than short-term market fluctuations.

He acknowledged the poor liquidity in the 30-year bond market and the various factors contributing to rising yields, including increasing U.S. debt and competition from corporate debt and foreign sovereigns.

Bessent also mentioned upcoming discussions on fiscal consolidation, highlighting the national debt surpassing $40 trillion, while asserting that global growth is essential for managing this debt burden
