In a letter to G20 finance ministers and central bank governors, Andrew Bailey expressed concerns about the risks posed by frontier AI models, which exhibit advanced autonomy and problem-solving capabilities.
He emphasized that these models could significantly increase cyber risks, potentially undermining market confidence, particularly due to the reliance on concentrated third-party service providers. Bailey noted that many jurisdictions lack adequate protocols to manage the deployment of such AI technologies, which raises the stakes for the financial sector.
He also pointed out existing vulnerabilities in sovereign debt markets, excessive debt usage in equity markets, and inflated asset valuations, especially in AI-related investments.
As the G20 summit convenes in North Carolina, these warnings underscore the pressing need for financial institutions and technology providers to enhance their vulnerability management and prepare for potential disruptions across multiple firms
