Sony and Marvel's latest release, 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day', achieved an estimated $355 million at the domestic box office during its opening weekend, just $2 million short of the record set by 'Avengers: Endgame' in 2019.
The film's strong performance began with record-breaking Thursday preview sales, accumulating $169.3 million on Friday and $101.5 million on Saturday, with projections of an $84 million Sunday. This makes 'Brand New Day' only the second film to surpass $300 million in domestic ticket sales during its opening weekend.
Internationally, the film added an estimated $572 million, including $121 million from China, bringing its global total to approximately $927 million. Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends at Rentrak, emphasized the significance of this opening for movie theaters, suggesting it could lead to the highest summer revenue since 2019, potentially exceeding $4 billion.
Approximately 24.1 million moviegoers attended theaters in the U.S. and Canada, with 21% opting for premium large-format screenings. Notably, Dolby Cinema recorded its highest-grossing domestic weekend ever with $10 million from 'Brand New Day', while Screen X and 4DX also set domestic records.
Kevin Feige, producer and president of Marvel Studios, expressed gratitude to audiences and highlighted the film's strong connection with fans, hinting at exciting developments for the franchise
