Rheinmetall is undertaking a major expansion at its facility in Bavaria, known as 'Project Firepower,' which aims to more than double its gunpowder production to 4,200 metric tons annually by 2028. CEO Armin Papperger emphasized that gunpowder is essential for ammunition, stating, 'Without gunpowder, it's impossible to protect our people.' The company has secured its supply of nitrocellulose, a key ingredient for ammunition propellant, alleviating previous shortages linked to reliance on Chinese imports.
Rheinmetall's expansion is not only a response to immediate demand but also a strategic initiative to bolster Europe's defense sovereignty, as the continent seeks to rebuild its military industrial base. Despite recent declines in Rheinmetall's stock, the company remains optimistic about future demand across various military applications, including drones and artillery.
