Anthropic's recent export control directive from the U.S. government has led to the suspension of its AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, which were launched just days prior. The directive, citing national security threats, required Anthropic to disable access for all users, a move that has escalated tensions between the company and the government.
Previously, the Department of Defense had labeled Anthropic a supply chain risk, restricting defense contractors from utilizing its technology. Despite having received prior approval for the models' deployment, the sudden directive caught Anthropic off guard, as they had no prior indication of a national security threat.
The company argues that the government's concerns stem from a potential narrow vulnerability in the models, which they believe should not warrant such drastic measures. Anthropic is currently seeking to resolve this issue and restore access to its models, emphasizing that the situation reflects a misunderstanding rather than a legitimate security risk
