American Airlines (AAL) anticipates increased losses in 2026 due to rising fuel costs despite record revenue

American Airlines announced that it expects to incur losses between $1 and $1.60 per share for the full year, a significant downgrade from its previous forecast of potential earnings. CEO Robert Isom noted that while the airline achieved record third-quarter revenue of $16.34 billion, a 19.3% increase year-over-year, the surge in fuel prices has overshadowed these gains.

The airline's fuel expenses rose 67.5% to $4.64 billion in the third quarter, driven by a spike in jet fuel prices following geopolitical tensions, particularly the Iran war. This increase in fuel costs has also led to a more than 20% rise in airfare compared to last year.

American Airlines is not alone in this predicament; Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, and Southwest Airlines have also lowered their forecasts due to similar challenges. For the fourth quarter, American anticipates a loss of between 50 cents and $1.10 per share, while still expecting revenue growth of up to 22.5% and a capacity increase of 5.5% to 6.5%.

This situation underscores the ongoing volatility in the airline sector, where external factors like fuel prices can significantly impact financial performance
