On Thursday, American Airlines announced the addition of seven international routes to its 2027 schedule, with many flights operated by the Airbus A321XLR, known for its long-range capabilities. The new routes include flights from Charlotte to Barcelona, Chicago to Tokyo, and New York to Amsterdam and Nice, among others.
The A321XLR allows American to serve smaller European cities more efficiently, as these single-aisle planes are cheaper to operate compared to larger widebody aircraft. Brian Znotins, American's senior vice president of network and schedule planning, emphasized that this aircraft opens up new destinations that are not viable for larger planes.
The Vienna route will be extended through early January 2028 to attract tourists during the Christmas season, reflecting a trend among airlines to increase capacity during off-peak times.
