AMD announced on Monday that it has agreed to acquire World Labs, a San Francisco-based AI lab known for developing world models that simulate 3D environments, for approximately $8.2 billion in an all-stock deal. This acquisition is AMD's second-largest to date, following its $50 billion purchase of Xilinx in 2022.
The move comes as major tech companies are increasingly investing in AI talent and technology. Notable recent acquisitions in the sector include OpenAI's $6.4 billion purchase of Jony Ive's AI startup and Nvidia's $33 billion investment in AI chipmaker Groq and Hugging Face.
AMD's acquisition of World Labs is expected to enhance its AI chip development by allowing the company to anticipate future capabilities needed in AI applications. World Labs was founded by Fei-Fei Li, a prominent AI researcher who will take on the role of chief scientist and executive vice president at AMD.
Li emphasized the potential of world models to create safer AI applications by enabling intelligent agents to learn in simulated environments before real-world deployment. AMD plans to keep World Labs operationally separate from its chipmaking business until the acquisition is finalized later this year
