Randstad CEO Sander van’t Noordende Highlights 30% Wage Increase for Skilled Trade Workers, Suggests Shift Away from Traditional College Paths

Sander van't Noordende, CEO of Randstad, emphasized in a CNBC interview that the traditional route of attending college for office jobs is becoming outdated. He pointed out that skilled trades are now offering competitive salaries, with wage growth of 30% in the U.S. over the past four years and notable increases in other countries as well.

For instance, mechanics earn an average of $79,000 in the Netherlands and $76,600 in Germany, while the housing and construction sector in the U.K. sees average salaries exceeding $78,500. The surge in demand for skilled trade workers is largely driven by the rapid expansion of data centers, which are essential for supporting the AI boom.

Major tech companies, including Alphabet, Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon, are projected to invest nearly $700 billion in capital expenditures this year to build these facilities, creating thousands of job opportunities. Randstad's analysis indicates a significant rise in job vacancies for roles such as robotic technicians and HVAC engineers, with increases of 107% and 67%, respectively.

Furthermore, entry-level workers with AI skills are commanding salaries up to 25% higher, and those with AI certifications are advancing in their careers much faster than their peers.

Despite the challenges posed by AI on entry-level job availability, there is a growing demand for human-centered skills, such as emotional intelligence and creativity, which have surged by 173% and 168%, respectively. This shift underscores the importance of combining technical skills with interpersonal abilities in the evolving job market
