According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, OpenAI is contemplating sharp price cuts for its artificial intelligence offerings, specifically targeting the pricing structure for tokens, which are used to bill for AI products. This decision appears to be a strategic response to the competitive landscape, particularly in light of Anthropic's pricing, which is lower for its services.

Currently, OpenAI offers tiered subscriptions for its GPT-5.5 models at $8, $20, and $100 or more per month, while Anthropic charges $17 monthly for its Claude Pro service and $100 or more for Claude Max.

The competitive pressure is further underscored by both companies filing for initial public offerings, with Anthropic recently closing a Series H funding round at a valuation of $965 billion, compared to OpenAI's $852 billion valuation in March.

Notably, OpenAI's ChatGPT has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first app to reach 1 billion monthly users, surpassing Google Maps' previous record. This context of rapid user growth and competitive pricing strategies is crucial for investors to understand the dynamics at play in the AI sector
