U.S. AI Companies, Including Anthropic and OpenAI, Expand Operations in London to Tap into Local Talent

A number of prominent U.S. tech and AI companies, including Anthropic and OpenAI, are increasing their office space in London, attracted by the city's deep talent pools and established technology ecosystem. Anthropic recently secured office space for 800 employees, significantly expanding its London presence, while Google plans to move teams into a new 11-storey building in Kings Cross.

Other companies like Cursor, Databricks, and Salesforce are also ramping up their operations in the city. The surge in demand for tech talent in London follows a period of stagnation post-pandemic, with a new wave of companies emerging in the AI sector, which has seen record funding of $392.1 billion globally this year, surpassing the previous record set in 2025.

London is recognized as a leading center for AI talent, bolstered by investments in research and development from firms like DeepMind, which has contributed to a mature talent base. However, the rapid expansion of these well-funded U.S. companies is intensifying competition for local startups, making it increasingly difficult for them to attract top talent.

Additionally, there are concerns about the availability of high-quality office space, with a projected shortfall of 10.4 million square feet by 2030, as AI firms compete with traditional sectors for limited resources. Infrastructure challenges, including the need for adequate support for talent and computing demands, also pose risks to sustaining this growth in London
