Waymo has begun offering rides in its Ojai robotaxis, which are designed to perform better in snowy conditions and are cheaper to produce than previous models. Initially available to select passengers in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Phoenix, the service will expand to San Diego, Las Vegas, and Denver by summer.

The Ojai vehicles, part of Waymo's nearly 4,000-car fleet, utilize the sixth-generation Waymo Driver, featuring advanced technology for low-light detection and improved lidar capabilities for adverse weather. Manufactured by China's Geely, these vehicles require fewer expensive sensors compared to earlier models like the Jaguar I-PACE.

Waymo's recent $16 billion funding boost from Alphabet and other investors supports its goal of increasing its fleet size significantly by year-end, with a target of 1 million weekly trips.

However, the company is also facing challenges, including a recent voluntary recall of 3,800 vehicles due to software issues and a temporary pause on freeway rides due to performance concerns in construction zones. Waymo's efforts to innovate and expand its fleet are critical as it navigates both growth opportunities and operational hurdles
