General Motors is laying off approximately 500 to 600 salaried employees in its information technology division as part of a broader effort to reassess workforce requirements and reduce costs. The layoffs, which began on Monday, primarily affect locations in Austin, Texas, and Warren, Michigan. GM has confirmed these reductions but has not provided specific details regarding the impacted roles.
In a statement, the company indicated that it is transforming its IT organization to better align with future needs and expressed gratitude for the contributions of the affected employees, committing to support them during this transition. As of the end of last year, GM employed around 68,000 salaried workers globally, with 47,000 of those in the U.S.
Despite the layoffs, GM is actively hiring for IT positions, with 82 openings available, including roles focused on artificial intelligence, motorsports, and autonomous vehicles.
This move follows a pattern of GM regularly reassessing its salaried workforce based on anticipated needs and skill requirements, as evidenced by previous layoffs of over 200 Computer-Aided Design engineers in October due to business conditions
