In 2026, biopharma mergers and acquisitions (M&A) have reached $106 billion across 201 deals, indicating a robust recovery from previous years. Analysts predict that if this pace continues, total deal value could exceed $250 billion, surpassing the 2019 peak.

Rajesh Kumar, Head of Life Sciences and Healthcare Equity Research at HSBC, noted that companies are aggressively acquiring assets, particularly in the $1 billion to $5 billion range, which are easier to integrate and face fewer regulatory hurdles. The average deal size has increased to $527.3 million from $365 million in 2025.

The driving force behind this M&A activity is the urgent need for pharmaceutical companies to replace revenues lost from patent expirations. While some companies, like Eli Lilly, are in a strong position to attract partnerships, others facing significant patent cliffs must focus on originating new products.

Additionally, interest in acquiring assets from Chinese biotech firms remains strong, despite regulatory challenges, as these companies often lack the resources to develop their products globally. The overall sentiment in public markets has improved, with the biotech index rising 50% over the past year, further encouraging investment in the sector
