Microsoft is currently in discussions to provide its custom Maia AI chips to Anthropic, a move that could strengthen Microsoft's foothold in the AI hardware sector, where it trails behind competitors like Amazon and Google.
Although no agreement has been finalized, the talks are significant given Microsoft's earlier commitment of $5 billion to Anthropic, which has also pledged to invest $30 billion in Microsoft's Azure cloud services. Anthropic's CEO, Dario Amodei, noted the company's increasing challenges with computing capacity, particularly as its AI tools, such as the Claude assistant, gain popularity.
Anthropic has historically relied on Nvidia's GPUs for its AI models but is also exploring partnerships with Amazon and Google for their custom chips. Microsoft's Maia 200 chip reportedly offers over 30% better performance in terms of cost efficiency compared to existing options, and it is already operational in Microsoft data centers.
